Overview:  Performs engineering activities associated with utility design services.  May be gas, electric, mechanical or civil engineering.

 

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

 

All levels:

  • Continually learns about electrical and gas power systems, construction and project work; gains exposure to job sites and project management
  • Conducts field audits for the construction of gas and/or electrical power systems
  • Provides engineering information to customers; responds to inquiries and requests
  • Collaborates to resolve problems
  • Designs or assists in designing distribution systems
  • Actively participates in meetings related to utility design services, projects, construction and departmental activities
  • Guards product and company reputation by complying with all applicable legal, safety and municipal requirements
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational opportunities, reading professional publications, networking and participating in professional associations
  • Serve as an example for other employees to strive towards and foster a culture of respect, integrity and kindness.
  • Other duties as assigned or prudent

Level II:

  • Design and construction of overhead and underground high voltage electrical systems
  • Responds to customer inquiries within the scope of their learning and experience
  • Trains and mentors less senior Engineering Technicians
  • Demonstrates knowledge of construction sites, the work and the feasibility of the construction
  • Fosters a safe, productive job-site environment and quality work products; encourages an attitude of safety and quality in others

Level III:

  • Comprehends every detail about the construction site, the work and the feasibility of the construction
  • Serves as project lead for jobs with little to no supervision
  • Performs design activities associated with any gas or electric project with little to no supervision
  • Subject matter expert for single and three phase services and gas extensions
  • Consults with customers; responsible for daily contract administration
  • Assesses risk management and cost optimization to align with agreed upon parameters
  • Fosters a safe, productive job site environment and quality work products; encourages an attitude of safety and quality in others; redirects less senior technicians who may start to do something in an unsafe way; demonstrates a concern for everyone's safety

 

Education and/or Experience:

Level I:

  • Associates' degree or technical program training and 2+ years' experience or Bachelors' degree with no experience

Level II:

  • Associates' degree or technical program training and 3+ years' experience or Bachelors' degree with one year or more of experience
  • Familiarity with three-phase services such as commercial developments and extensions, large meter sets, regulator stations, transmissions, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of single-phase services, lighting and gas extensions

Level III:

  • Associates' degree or technical program training and 4+ years' experience or Bachelors' degree with 2 + years' experience
  • Proficiency with CAD and/or Microstation
